Ackton OCCS

As Assistant Site Engineer, Stephen was specifically responsible for supervising all environmental engineering matters on site. In particular this involved developing innovative and novel blast design and shotfiring techniques which pushed the boundaries of what was possible at the time. This allowed blasting of rock to release lower coal seams very close to residential conurbation. He was also responsible for the design of river diversion and restoration to country park and public open space.

Coal Mining

SUMMARY

The site near Featherstone involved excavating through the old colliery spoil heaps into the shallower coal seams to extract 4 million tonnes of high quality coal. The production was enhanced by washing the previously discarded coal from the colliery spoil heaps. The despoiled and derelict land was then restored to a country park and farmland.
