St. Aidans OCCS

As British Coal Opencast Executive's Project Leader, Stephen was responsible for and led the overall project coordination, and supervision of all the various ICE contracts needed for this complex project, that required its own Act of Parliament to provide consent for the works. He supervised and headed up a team of engineering consultants, architects, environmental consultants, and quantity and cost control specialists. He prepared and assessed tender documents. He represented the client to the local authority and other statutory bodies, and was publicly accountable, ensuring that complex and sometimes conflicting legal requirements were met.

SUMMARY

This project consisted of a major civil engineering scheme to construct a new 3.5km section of the Aire & Calder navigation, build three composite bridges, a 25m weir, a 75m long 8m deep lock suitable for commercial navigation, complete with mooring basin and associated lock keeper’s cottage. The project also required the construction and filling of a fully lined putrescible waste site, 1.2km of pumping main, and other utility diversions.
The project required the existing river Aire and navigation to function throughout.
This project enabled the release of the remaining coal reserves at the flooded St. Aidans opencast site.
